Andrew Shields of Escape Youth Services shares information for youth workers on using TikTok.

This is a recording of a short Webinar session, shared live in April 2020.

Andrew’s webinar covers….

TikTok basics

Tiktok is a platform where you can share a 15 – 60 sec video. It can be comedy, information, dance, music, a way of showcasing talents, lipsyncing and more.

It’s algorithm works a bit differently from facebook and Instagram and if your going to use it for youth work it’s important to understand how it works.

On the video, Andrew talks about the main feature of the app as well as ways in which it can be used for youth work.

When you create your video you can post it as public, friends only or private.

However, it’s important to be aware that as a user on TikTok you can’t control what videos you are seeing. Andrew says, “It’s really important that we get that message across to both youth workers and young people.”

A way to engage

Andrew says, “It’s all about starting where the young people are at and TikTok is very popular right now. Being on TikTok provides me with a way of engaging with young people, where we can share videos.

During the lockdown NHS has been using TikTok as a way of getting the message across about washing your hands and staying at home.

Andrew explains how he is using the app to stay in touch with his dance group and share dance videos with them. They can then share videos privately with the group

Take time to understand the privacy settings

Privacy setting enable you to control who sees your video content. Knowing and understanding these setting is a key aspect of using TikTok with young people.

Helping young people understand the privacy settings can help them avoid seeing upsetting content. TikTok is a platform where you will see material that is explicit or abusive. By being on this platform Andrew explains how he is helping to direct young people to use the platform in a responsible way and be more in control of what they see.

Summing up, Andrew says, “There are a lot of pros and cons to this platform. Every organisation needs to do their research and find out how to use this platform in the best way for them and the young people they work with.”
